About UK Transcription

UK Transcription began life in 2004 as an internal project at the University of Bristol, where a small group of five students started transcribing interviews on behalf of university researchers. What started as a small student group quietly grew over the following years to a team of over 100 transcribers.

By 2007, the group had evolved enough to warrant full time staff and incorporation as a limited company, hiring its first full-time project manger. The growth has been organic and incremental ever since, built on a foundation of professionalism and accuracy that has earned the company a reputation across the academic and professional sectors. Some of our transcribers have been with the company for over 20 years, dating back to those early Bristol days.

In 2008, UK Transcription established a dedicated commercial office in Brighton, where the company operated for the next 10 years. Without any particular intention, most of the in-house transcribers and support staff came from the university's philosophy department, for reasons that remain somewhat mysterious even today.

Embracing Remote Work

The nature of transcription work lends itself well to remote working, and over the years the company gradually shifted toward home-based operations. When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, 90% of staff were already working from home, making the transition to fully remote operations a relatively straightforward step. The company closed its physical offices and now operates completely remotely with a virtual registered office.

Every person who works for and with UK Transcription is based in the UK and paid into a UK bank account, contributing to data security and maintaining consistent quality standards under UK jurisdiction.

Our Foundation

The founder holds a dual degree in speech technology and English literature – a combination that, with hindsight, proved to be an ideal pairing for the transcription industry. This academic background has informed the company's approach to delivering accurate, nuanced transcription services that understand both the technical and linguistic complexities of the work.
